Ode to my Green Drink

This last year I discovered the green drink, and now day just isn't the same when I don't start it out with my GREN DRINK. It all started when I read the book by Victoria Boutenko GREEN FOR LIFE. (click for link) Parts of this information is taken from her site.

My favorite recipe is 2-3 ripe bananas, 1 apple, 1 cup of juice; I like any flavor of Naked Juice, 2 cups of ice, and about 1 lb of spinach. Yes, I said ONE POUND of spinach. I mix this in a Vita Mix, and it is heavenly! It might look green, but it tastes like a fruit smoothie. °Ü°

I make my “GREEN DRINK” every morning, and if DH isn’t making something better like banana chocolate chip pancakes, my family will usually join me, in fact they ask for it.

1. Green drinks are very healthy. The best tasting ratio is about 60% - ripe organic fruit mixed with about 40% - organic green vegetables.

2. Green drinks are easy to digest. When blended well, all the valuable nutrients in these fruits and veggies become homogenized, or divided into such small particles that it becomes easy for the body to assimilate these nutrients; the green drink literally start to get absorbed in your mouth.

3. Green drink, as apposed to juices, are a complete food because they still have fiber.

4. Green drink taste so yummy. With a ratio of fruits to veggies as 60/40 the fruit taste dominates the flavor, yet at the same time the green vegetables balance out the sweetness of the fruit.

5. By consuming two or three cups of green drink daily (I usually drink the whole 2 quarts in one day), you will consume enough of greens for the day to nourish your body, and they will be well assimilated. Many people do not consume enough of greens, even those on a raw food diet. The molecule of chlorophyll has only one atom that makes it different from a molecule of human blood. According to teachings of Dr. Ann Wigmore, to consume chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion.

6. Green smoothies are perfect food for children of all ages, including babies of six or more months old when introducing new food to them after mother’s milk. Of course you have to be careful and slowly increase the amount of green drink to avoid food allergies.

7. Regular consumption of Green a drink forms a good habit of eating greens. Many people say that after a couple of weeks of drinking green drink, they started to crave and enjoy eating more greens.

8. There are many ideas for your green creations. Some of my favorite greens to add to green drink: parsley, spinach, celery, kale and romaine. My favorite fruits for green drink are: pears, peaches, nectarines, bananas, mangoes and apples. Strawberries and raspberries taste superb in green smoothies, when combined with ripe bananas. So go a head now, give it a try! °Ü°

It’s only been 1 day since my last confession...I mean, birth!

It’s only been 1 day since my last birth, and I was called out AGAIN!  When I have clients due at the same time, or not even due, but one may come early and the other late, so it ends up that they both could go at any time, my prayer every night is…”Thank you for each baby having their own Birth-day with plenty of rest in-between”.  Well, I wouldn’t say I had plenty of rest, but I got some.

I arrived around 8:00 PM and hung out while she was in labor.  Her contx were about 5- 7 minutes, but getting closer and stronger fairly quickly, by 11:00 PM things were rockin’ and rollin’!  Mom was breathing like a champ through some pretty intense contx, and still laughing in between them every 2-3 minutes.  At 3:00 AM I was thinking we must be getting pretty close, but mom was getting a very tired.  She decided to lie down to hopefully, maybe rest in-between contx.  Evidently that’s exactly what her body needed, because contx CEASED, STOPPED, NADA!  The good thing is, we all got a couple of hours worth of sleep, which I SO DESPERATELY needed, as this was the second night of sleep I missed out on in 2 days.  We decided to rest for the day, contx would probably pick up again in the late afternoon, as this had been her pattern for the past few days.  Yes, PATIENCE is the name of my game!  As long as baby and mom are both HAPPY and showing no signs of concern or stress, we just wait patiently for baby to receive all the last minute instruction she may be getting before coming to this earth.

Sure enough contx picked up again around 2:00 PM, so off I went.  A similar labor pattern came, it was like a repeat from the last night, except, this time contx didn’t slow down.  They came on and continued to come closer together and get stronger and last longer.  As usual birth is VERY intense, and there comes a time when EVERY mom says, “I can’t do this any longer”.  I LOVE those words because, I know when I hear them, it won’t be much longer.  THANK GOODNESS!  This birth was no different in that respect.  We had a happy, healthy mom and BABY GIRL at 11:00 PM.

Now for the long drive home, about an hour and a half.  Once again I call on my ANGELS to assist me as I drive.  I don’t know how I would make it on the road with as little sleep as I get sometime without my ANGELS!  Thank you ANGELS!

This week was CRAAAZY!

I have been trying to decide if I wanted to put any birth stories up on my blog or not, I mean I am the baby catcher, and most of you who read my blog know and love me, and are used to hearing about my births.  So I decided to give it a run.  Your comments will help me decide whether it is an interesting read or not, and whether I will continue, but be forewarned they may be long posts.

This week was CRAAAZY!  It started on Wednesday the 5th at 2:00 AM, the phone rings; it’s one of my moms in labor.  Contrx had been going pretty strong for a couple of hours, so she wanted me to come over.  At 6:30 AM she was 5-6 cm dilated, and her plan was to go to the hospital, I was just her doula as apposed to her midwife.  I recommended she go now, because it was an hour and half drive to her hospital of choice.  She refused, she was way to comfortable at home.  She got back in the birth pool and I snuck home to kiss my husband good-buy, as he was leaving for Iraq at 7:00 AM.  Yes, I was planning on taking him, but we always have a back-up plan, so Kayla drove him to the airport.

I returned to my client’s house, and found her laboring in the birth pool with very strong contractions and doing well.  At 9:00 AM a little voice inside my head said, (Yes, for those of you who don’t know, I hear voices) “You need to go to the hospital, there will be time, but you need to go now.”  I let my client know she had one more chance to decide to go to the hospital, if she wanted to go, it was REALLY time and she agreed.

We quickly got things together, and away we went on our hour and half drive, with dad riding shotgun and mom in the back seat, lying down, and... oh I forgot one detail, mom refused to wear any clothes.  Yes, I was flying down the road calling on my angels, with a naked pregnant mom, in labor, with contx every 2 minutes in my back seat.  No worries, I lined the back seat with CHUX  before mom got in.  I must have passed at least a dozen POLICE CARS.  I still can’t believe none of them pulled me over, but could you imagine if they did!  They certainly would have gotten an eye full.  I was kind of hoping for a police escort.

Mom feels lots of pressure, like she has to push, I’m thinking holy crap, do I need to pull over to deliver a baby on the side of the freeway???  That little voice inside says, "NO; just keep driving".  So my obedient little self gladly kept driving.

We made our 1 ½ hour drive in about 1 hour.  Thank you ANGELS!  Dad ran in the hospital to grab a wheelchair, and I helped mom out of the car, trying soooooo hard to cover her with a very short terrycloth robe she brought.  She really didn’t want anything to do with being covered, I insisted, and grabbed a blanket from the back of my car to assure her modesty.  I grabbed a chux to put down on the seat of the wheelchair and Dad wheeled mom up to the 8th floor while I parked the car.

They had a room waiting for her; we called them to give them a heads up that we were coming.  They checked her and she was 7 cm dilated.  The nursed asked where we got the wheel chair from because it wasn’t one of theirs.  Evidently, dad had grabbed someone’s private wheelchair.  They must have been loading into a vehicle and dad just saw and empty wheelchair and snatched it.  We quickly returned it back to the lobby, and hopefully the owner found it, not having any idea that some naked pregnant lady was sitting in it.

Long story short, we had an 8 lb 13 oz baby BOY.  All was well, mom and baby happy and healthy. °Ü°
